What can I expect at a Wine Trail Ride?

You’ll experience the Best Culinary Tourism Experience in Ontario as we cycle through the Essex Pelee Island Coast and experience the tastes, sights and sounds of the region. Essex County has some of the best wine in the world and there is no better way to enjoy the surrounding region then by pedaling your way through it. You’ll be able to sip the local wine and learn about each award winning winery we visit.

Participants on our Wine Trail Ride visit 2-3 wineries on each ride and are then treated to a local meal made with products from Essex County. Purchases made along the way will be collected and delivered to our final destination.

Our guide and cycling expert will be on hand to show us the way and answer questions. Tickets for Wine Trail Rides sell out quickly so if you are interested, purchase your tickets early.
Each Wine Trail Ride includes tastings, tours and a meal made with local Essex County products. A guide will lead us to each winery and vehicle will collect purchases made along the way and bring them to our final destination.

Our Wine Trail Rides were developed in 2008. Since then we have been providing visitors to our region with a unique culinary experience. In 2009, the Wine Trail Rides were selected as the Best Culinary Tourism Experience in Ontario. In 2010, the Wine Trail Rides were awarded a National Award for Tourism Excellence.

When do Wine Trail Rides take place?

Wine Trail Rides take place May through October. Personal rides take place throughout the season.

What type of bike should I bring?

The best type of bike will vary depending on the route we are taking. Be sure to look at the schedule to see what type of surface we will be riding on. We do recommend, however, not bringing a single-gear bike…unless you’re a glutton for punishment.

I don’t have a bike, can I still participate?

Of course! Participants are required to bring their own bicycle and helmet with them to the Wine Trail ride or you can rent the items from WindsorEats. For those that do not have access to a bike and helmet, WindsorEats offers bike rental services. Single bicycles and tandem bicycles are available to rent for the duration of the Wine Trail Ride. Each rental package includes a ticket(s) to the event, bicycle and helmet.

Tandem bicycle? What’s that?

Tandems are bicycles built for two.

Do I have to wear a helmet?

Yes. Helmets are mandatory, regardless of your worries about “helmet head”.

What is the route like?

Each route is different, but the majority of our rides use a combination of road and trail. Our landscape is flat which makes Essex County perfect for all levels of cycling and just a great cycling destination overall. We use the Chrysler Canada Greenway trail as much as we can. The Chrysler Canada Greenway is the southern-most section of the Trans Canada Trail. It connects natural areas, rich agricultural lands, historically and architecturally significant structures, wineries, farm stands and many other features that make the Essex Region unique.

How do I purchase tickets?

Visit www.winetrailride.ca and click on Purchase Tickets. Select Packages for Bike Rentals or Individual Tickets. Select the date, you would like to attend, input the number of tickets you would like to purchase, select your meal option, add to bag and proceed to the checkout. If you would like to purchase tickets to multiple events, you can add them all to your shopping cart prior to checking out.

When purchasing your ticket, please include all of your contact information (including email address and phone number) so we can communicate with you effectively. Please ensure that you include detail on any food restrictions you may have.

Tickets are not sold the day of ride. All sales end the Thursday prior to event.

What is the price per person and what is included in that price?

If you bring your own bike, tickets start at $75 per person (not including tax) which includes tastings, tours, a guide, support vehicle, and a fantastic dinner made with local Essex County products. A guide will lead us to each winery and our support vehicle will collect purchases made along the way and bring them to our final destination.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept online payment only. You can use any major credit card (VISA, MasterCard or AMEX). Cash or check orders cannot be processed.

I purchased my tickets. Where are they?

To maintain a good relationship with Mother Nature, our ticket system is paperless. You will receive a reminder the week of the ride and on the day of the tour your name and information will be at the sign-in. Remember to bring I.D. so we know you are who you say you are.

How many people attend the events?

There is an average of 30-50 people on each ride.

What’s for dinner?

Mother Nature and our farmers guide us when planning a meal. Because our menus are based on the season and what is available at the time of the ride, menus are not often developed until the week of the ride. We want the dinner to be a reflection of the season and what is available locally. We like to think the element of surprise is all part of the experience! The menu will be at the table when you arrive from your cycling tour. Please ensure that you have informed us of any food restrictions you may have prior to the date of the ride.

Can you accommodate persons with dietary restrictions such as vegetarians, vegans or people with food allergies?

Our dinners are communal and everyone dines at the same table. We try our best to accommodate guests with dietary restrictions and food allergies. When purchasing your ticket, please select the appropriate option and provide us with additional details on check out.

If you have a dietary restriction or allergy we ask that you contact us in advance of the ride with details so that we can accommodate your requests.

Where did you get those plates?

So you like our dinnerware, eh? So do we! We want to make your experience with us a special one. Our table is set with a collection of vintage china, cutlery and linens that we’ve collected over the years. They remind of us days gone by when fancy dinner parties were all the rage.

When will I receive directions to the starting point and other important information about the event?

We send out details of the ride to our confirmed guests at least two weeks prior to the event. It will include directions to the starting location, helpful hints, and finalized dinner details, if available.

Does Wine Trail Ride host private events?

Yes! Apart from the regularly scheduled rides that take place once a month, WindsorEats also offers personal group rides. These rides can be scheduled any day of the week. Once the group selects a date, WindsorEats will organize the route, meal and details. These rides include tours, tastings, experienced guide, enhanced, gourmet meal as well as a bicycle and helmet. These rides are ideal for groups that cannot make the regularly scheduled rides or have a special event that they want to celebrate with family and friends. Family outings, bridal parties, corporate events, are just a few of the groups we’ve had out with us. If you’re interested in setting up a private ride, please contact us.

Do you sell gift certificates?

Yes, you can purchase gift certificates on the Shop page. When you complete the purchase a gift certificate will be sent to you via email.

Can you accommodate children?

Wine Trail Rides are only available for those 19 years and older.

Is there a wait list for sold out events? What if I have tickets but I can’t attend the event?

Once a Wine Trail Ride is sold out, no additional seats will become available for the event. Due to the nature of our events no refunds will be given for cancellations. If you cannot attend a Wine Trail Ride and you wish to transfer your tickets please contact us with new guest information prior to the event.

What time do the events begin and how late do they go?

The ride begins promptly at 11:30am and we generally arrive for the meal at 3:30pm. The length of each event is approximately five hours.

What if it rains?

We ride on! (We’re tough like that.) Some of our best rides have been in the rain.

Any other details I should know?

Just have a great time! The Wine Trail Rides have won some really nice awards because they are a great way to spend the day and experience our region. We are quite proud of them! Each ride is different and celebrates what we love about where we live.
